The Aftermath of Roof Damage: How to Repair a Water Spot on the Ceiling
When you see a water spot on the ceiling, the issue is usually related with the roof. If you’re on the bottom floor, and there’s actually another floor between you and the roof, then chances are you just have to replace the old caulking that’s letting moisture seep through the ceiling, and then you can go about repairing the actual stain.
In all cases, it’s very important to address the root cause of the ceiling stain first. Failing to do that will lead to the stain just returning and getting bigger over time.
If the roof is to blame, it can be one of a number of different issues, including:
· A leak caused by damaged flashing;
· Broken shingles coupled with damage to the decking and underlayment;
· Weakened seals around your roof’s main vents.
The most important thing is to address the issue at hand and fix your roof, either by replacing your flashing and shingles, or dealing with the underlayment damage – or any other damage to the internal structure which might be the cause of the leak.
If you’re not big on DIY roofing, it’s usually best to call your local Centennial roofing companies for a detailed roof inspection and to repair the roof. After that, you can clean the affected area on the ceiling with bleach and apply a stain-blocking primer that will act as a viable base coat for supporting a new paint job.
