Is the EPDM Membrane a Good Support for a Green Roof?

Eco-roofs, also known as green roofs, are essentially green turfs with vegetation installed on a home or building. Aside from being aesthetically pleasing and good for the environment, these roofing systems are also very good at reducing CO2 emissions and keeping the air clean around your property. If cities adopted green roofing systems for all or most of their buildings, pollution levels could significantly drop.

If you’re already sold on the benefits of green roofing, you might have to consider how to install one or have one of your Highlands Ranch roofing professionals do the job. It’s obvious that the roof will need some sort of inner support, so why not provide it the best support and install it on top of your existing EPDM membrane roof? Also, if you have a different type of roof, should you scrap it and use EPDM instead?

There are cases when green roofing systems can be installed on top of other types of roofs, but EPDM is in fact one of the most common waterproof supports used to provide the base for a green roofing system. Because of its durability and weatherproofing qualities – especially that it doesn’t easily allow water to flow through it – EPDM is considered by many to be the ideal candidate. You can use it to also provide insulation, ensure that you won’t have to deal with excessive moisture and condensation, lower your heating and cooling costs, and keep installation expenses at a minimum.
